2024: A Breakthrough Year for Age Diversity and Collaboration

Older workers, 2024 was another good year; in schools, workplaces, and government, new initiatives were introduced for more inclusive, age-friendly environments.

In New York City, 13 Brooklyn high schools launched the Intergenerational Connections to Fight Ageism  pilot program. With creative lesson plans, open discussions, and hands-on projects, the program is helping students see the value of age diversity. As NYC Mayor Eric Adams put it, “Today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders.” It will be fascinating to see how their attitudes and behaviors around age diversity will be demonstrated in the workplace!

In Colorado, the Job Applications Fairness Act, introduced in July, bans age-related inquiries on initial employment applications and ensures hiring decisions are based on merit—not outdated assumptions about age.

Age has Nothing to do With Ability

Older workers, another inspiring trend is men aged 70 and older rejoining the workforce in record numbers. According to a recent MarketWatch article the percentage of men in this age group who are working is now the highest it’s been in nearly 50 years. It's only a matter of time before women in the same age group follow.

Older workers, age-diverse teams are proving that together different generations can create synergy; experienced workers bring wisdom and life experience, while younger generations contribute fresh ideas.

Older workers, On Your Own Time is always here for you. Not only do we connect experienced professionals with flexible opportunities but we also help prepare older workers for today’s workplace. Through diverse training, and sharing of  information and ideas, we equip them with the tools they need to succeed.

Older workers, let’s use these U.S. examples to keep pushing for intergenerational collaboration and age-diversity at home in 2025 and beyond. The future is looking bright for workers of all ages.

I wish a healthy and happy new year to everyone!
