Employment Practices in the News
This quotation, from FP Works. very simply supports On Your Own Time's Employment Practices blog today, “Canada's population isn't getting any younger, so labor shortages persist and the cost of living remains high. It benefits both employers and seniors, not to mention the economy, for both sides to keep working together as long as they can.”
Employment Practices in the US
As I continue to grow On Your Own Time I've learned a lot about the AARP, which stands for American Association of Retired People. It supports an Employer Pledge program that awards member employers, in different ways, for giving equal consideration to all applicants when recruiting. All applicants includes senior workers.
Employment Practices in Canada
I looked for Canadian organizations that support a similar program and came across the Canada’s Best Diversity Employers 2023 site. The selection criteria for the winners of that competition include diversity (which is simply a range of human differences) initiatives for employees from five groups:
Women
Members of visible minorities
Persons with disabilities
Indigenous peoples
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered/transsexual (LGBTQ2S).
I randomly selected 20 of the winners and had a quick look at their impressive DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) programs. I found that while senior workers fall into the diversity category they were in the minority amongst the overviews and photos I looked at.
Employment Practices Led by HR Professionals
Does your DEI program include regularly hiring senior workers, who may be either retirees or others who are 50+ years of age and still want/need to work ? As a reminder, senior workers offer:
A variety of skills gained from extensive experience
A strong work ethic
Loyalty and stability
Self-managing ability
Training and mentoring capabilities
Intergenerational team skills
And they enhance the reputation of the employer as a supporter of DEI.
Employment Practices that Recognize Senior Workers
Would you like your organization to be recognized for a DEI program that includes hiring senior workers? If so, are you interested in joining a task force, with the potential to create a meaningful difference in the workplace?
If you would like to help advocate for a program that encourages employers to consider all applicants and maximize what senior workers offer, contact On Your Own Time . Through collaboration we can create a win-win situation that benefits everyone involved.
