In our last blog we discussed how an impressive resume can contribute to mature workers' success at working in retirement. Next, let's talk about the importance of showing a positive attitude.
Mature Workers' Success is a Reason to Be Proud
Many of you had long and satisfying careers that shaped you into accomplished individuals and helped you advance, by mastering complex work, taking on leadership roles, or acquiring in-depth knowledge. You're proud of those accomplishments; they represent who you are.
Mature Workers Should Not Come Across as a Know It All
As a mature worker you'll be taking your past experiences and accomplishments with you, into your new job. It's likely that you'll be working with less experienced, younger people, possibly including your boss. In those situations it's easy for many new employees, not just mature workers, to come across as a know-it-all by:
Explaining things that people already know
Interrupting to correct others
Giving unsolicited advice
Boasting about your success and achievements
Having to be right all the time
You've all met people who behave that way and you know how it feels to be on the receiving end. It minimizes your confidence and interest in working with those people.
This video, Stop Being a Know-It-All, offers some interesting insight.
Mature Workers' Success Requires a Humble Attitude
We mature workers know that we need to approach the new workplace with humility, which is simply a modest view of our own importance. Share your knowledge - that's why you got the job - but do it in a respectful manner that enlightens people you work with. This behaviour will help warm others to you and you'll stand out as a valuable asset to your co-workers and boss. It's easy:
Listen more than you talk; remember, you have two ears, but only one mouth
Be aware of your body language; sometimes it can say more than your spoken words
Admit when you don't know something; even laugh at yourself
Open your mind to learning new things because you will have to
